cONTROL AND DISCORD
Group GALLERY PROJECT
Personal project made to participate in a group show exhibition called "NOISE" displayed at the Maxine Merlino Gallery. As a group, we decided on the theme of surveillance and our interpretation of what surveillance is to us artists. My interpretation of surveillance was about control and the outcome of it.
choice of medium: Sharpie on canvas
I started off the theme of control with myself where I searched a difficult way to produce this art piece choosing sharpie as my main tool. I chose the sharpie for the reason of the difficulty to achieve value and line weight variation which will challenge me as an artist to control the piece.

details
The discovery I found when drawing with sharpie on canvas is that you can achieve half-tone type effects depending on how lightly you draw on the canvas.
Brainstorming
After selecting the choice of medium, I started brainstorming what I could present on the canvas by jotting down some key words that link to my idea of what controls us through technology which blocks off our senses and gathers information. I found this familiarity with how we control animals to be trained for our benefit as well and decided to bring in the hooded falcon as an example to my project.
Art display
After completing the pieces, I displayed them side by side. I attempted to illustrate visual outcomes of control where a falcon is calmed through taking away its sense of vision and we are controlled with technology by overloading our senses with visual and audio. The use of sharpie on canvas is an attempts to display the control as an artist and displaying the pieces raw tests self control of the audience.
testing self control
After the installation was finished, I proceeded to install a working sharpie next to the pieces to see if anybody would be tempted to draw on it. I did this to see if people have self control to not draw on the pieces in an exhibition environment. And as I anticipated, some people do not have that control.
