Illustration Project
This project was a piece made for an AAPI illustration lookbook with several artists to illustrate the cultural outfits of the countries from Asia. Artists were tasked different countries to do research of the culture and design an original outfit based on what they researched. With this in mind, I have created a design of the outfit to reflect the respect to the cultural aspect of what a Kimono is to Japan.

REferences and research
Started off by researching the cultural history the Kimono represented for Japan and through my research found the Kimono was commonly known to illustrate a narrative depending on the theme. The seasons were one of the most common theme found in Kimono designs and moved forward with that in mind.
The season I wanted represented on my kimono was Winter because culturally, Japan celebrates winter as the season of welcoming a new beginning and change. With this, I chose winter flowers, foliage, and scenery to be included in the design.
Underpainting in dulled raw umber tone and flushed out the details.

shape design development
Started the design portion with making big shapes to confirm the design will have a good silhouette so it will catch the eyes of its viewers. From there I go into Refining the shapes so the shape won't get lost by the details added.

Refining details
After the form is finalized, the details and motif I wanted to incorporate is added on this stage. Balancing the narrative of the progression of time through scenery, I varied the details from simple to complex designs.
Complete illustration
Finished up the design of the kimono to have some gold and white outlines around the focal details and glazed in the shadow and highlights.
